FAQs

Which gas detector is right for me and can you help me figure it out before I buy?

Yes, We’ll help you choose based on your job and the gases you need to monitor. Many industries use standard 4-gas monitors, while others need single-gas or specialty units. The first step is deciding between a personal unit (diffusion) or a pumped unit to check a space before entering. If you’re unsure, just ask… We will guide you.

What is a bump test and how should I do it?

A bump test check that your detector alarms respond to gas. Expose it to test gas and make sure the lights, horns and display react. It only takes a few seconds. Another good thing to check and often missed, if you have a pumped instrument, block the inlet with your finger to ensure the pump is indicating a low flow alarm or stall.

What happens if my gas detector fails a bump test?

If your detector fails a bump test, don’t use it. It usually means the sensors or calibration are off. The next step is a full calibration or sending it in for service. We can help diagnose and fix it quickly.

Difference between bump test and calibration?

A bump test is a quick functional test to confirm the sensors, lights and horn are responding to gas. A calibration is an accuracy check and adjustment process to ensure readings match a known concentration of gas. Think of it this way: A bump test confirms it's alive. A calibration ensures it's honest.

Does my gas detector require maintenance? How long do sensors typically last?

Yes, like any safety equipment, gas detectors need upkeep. Sensors don’t last forever. Most sensors last 2–4 years on average. Regular bump testing and service are the only way to know they are still reliable.

Does K2 service monitors? If so, which brands?

Yes, we service and repair most major brands, including GfG Instrumentation, Ion Science, Senko, BW Technologies, RAE Systems, MSA, Industrial Scientific, and RKI Instruments. If you don’t see your brand listed, reach out and we’ll let you know if we can help.

Can I mail in my monitor or do you only service locally?

Both. You can drop off units at our Southern California office (Mon-Fri, 8am to 4pm) or mail them in from anywhere in the U.S. If you'd like to ship in detectors for service, you can download this form and include a copy with your equipment: Service Form

Do you offer rentals if mine is being repaired?

Yes, we keep rental units available so you can stay compliant and safe while your detector is being serviced. Plus, we give you 50% off the rental while yours is being repaired.

Do you provide a certificate after calibration?

Yes, every calibration comes with a NIST-traceable certificate and a sticker with the service date and the next due date for compliance tracking.

What’s the warranty on a new detector?

It varies by brand. Most cover at least 1-3 years. GfG Instrumentation, for example, offers a 5-year O2 sensor warranty on some models and a LIFETIME warranty on electronics. We can explain the warranty for the model you choose.
